“I've already dedicated many hours to the past. Now I want to make a film about the future, about living in Mexico, about the dreams of childhood.”

"Once Upon a Time", Rulfo's new film, to release in 2020

The feature documentary Once Upon a Time, directed by Juan Carlos Rulfo, will be in theaters in 2020.

The film is a reflection on the future, on hope and on dreams, with several stories interwoven through a central character: Luisa, a ten-year-old girl.

The filmmaker is currently editing the film, which began production in 2012. Along the way, Rulfo made decisions about the documentary's direction, separating the stories about his father and creating from them what would later become One Hundred Years with Juan Rulfo, a seven-episode TV series.

Now, Once Upon a Time takes shape as something different: “I've already dedicated many hours to the past. Now I want to make a film about the future, about living in Mexico, about the dreams of childhood… about everything that unsettles me now that I see my own children growing up,” Juan Carlos Rulfo notes.

The documentary was shot on the Costa Chica of Guerrero, in Veracruz, the State of Mexico, Oaxaca and Mexico City.
